Soma Tri
Ok, so I came to AZ to race SOMA. It started out as a stressfull experience. I missed my swim start. When I realized that my swim wave was sent off and that I had the wrong colored cap, I jumped in and swam like mad! And all in all, I had a good swim. My time was about 4-5 minutes off of my expecation, but fit to the situation. When I got out, I got on the bike and felt a stress to catch up. It was a little crowded and with the many turns was a little hard to get free of bike traffic. But finally I did and had a great bike. My best time for a Half Ironman. But, I realize there was some inherrant drafting and it was a lightning fast and flat course. Still, I was happy. So off to the run and that is when I felt it. Heat (yeh a dry heat!!). About four miles into the run, I felt it. I don't know if it was the heat or the fact that I blew my energy on the bike. Either way.........the finishing strides of my race were slow and painful. It is a flat run, so I have run slower, but have not felt more pathetic than I did that day.
I am from Oregan. Did anyone else from AZ have the same issue with the heat?!! Or are my bones just tooooooo used to the cold cloud covered weather of the northwest?? Will I return? YES! I loved Tempe. I should have gone to ASU! And the race was great despite the cursing I was doing during my final steps!!!

I agree, weather is
I agree, weather is definately a factor this late in the year for us.
The XTERRA Championship course is awesome. Have done that race a handful of times (placed quite well too). However, have not done that race over the last 2 years because the race is now being pushed back to the first weekend of October. Even if the weather is nice during this time of the year, it cools off so much at night that that at 7000' elevation the lake is freezing cold.
You never know what you will get during that time of the year. I have actually done that race with a storm coming in and the lake had 3+ foot waves and made for a scary swim.
I think this years race had a snow storm come in. That is just not fun having to try and race in that type of weather. They need to push that race up to the beginning of September.
Sounds like you have done the race before, did you like it? Tough, tough, tough course!
Totally! I think we work
Totally! I think we work extra hard to keep fit. It's colder, gets dark earlier.........blah blah blah. Excuses suck I guess........I still can't believe Xterra Championships are held in Lake Tahoe so late in the year. The weather has not been kind to that race!
I live in Reno and have the
I live in Reno and have the same problem travelling south for races late in the year. The temps change up here and the heat is still on in the South, it's hard to prepare for it. Also hard to stay race fit/healthy as the temps change too.
