Weekend Warrior
Many people have asked me what's going on, where am I, what am I up to?
Well this last weekend was pretty busy, Friday night, one of my good friends, who happens to be the president of the Northern Arizona Triathlon Club came down to Tucson from Flagstaff to visit Friday through Saturday. I felt like I should show her a good time. So here it goes...
Friday night we went to a birthday party for the president of the UofA tri club's gf, and stayed out until about 2 in the AM. I decided not to get overly drunk of the box wine and jello shots because we had a bike race to wake up early for Saturday.
Saturday morning, get up at 5:30 pick up a couple of friends and drive to Old Spanish Trail and Houghton to do a Time Trial with the TriCats. Long story short, I win the TT on my new bike beating all of my rivals, I was very happy. Ok so the time trial was only 12 miles, so a couple of us decide that we want to do more. Next stop Mt. Lemmon. About five of us set out to conquer Mt. Lemmon on our tt bikes, and 3 hours and 28 miles up, we are at Ski Valley. It was pretty windy, and cold way the freak up there.
Ski Valley is pretty nice in October, the locals put on an October Fest every weekend and serve up beer, brats, and an assortment of German side dishes all whilst a polka band plays in the background. I used to live in Munich (home of the Oktober Fest), so it was nice to have a non corporate style event to enjoy and remind me of my past life in Germany.
I only had one beer, and waited about an hour after to begin the descent back to the high desert of Tucson. The first 3 miles were mighty chilly with the 30mph wind chill + crosswinds + altitude, and I was glad to be off the top after 10 minutes. The people that I was with decided that we should race to the bottom, which is always fine with me, since I don't have health insurance. I tried to get in Aero on my bike, but I had my filp flops in my jersey pocket and couldn't do it without worrying about losing them. However, there was something pretty cool that I discovered about my new bike, I can pedal affectively even at speeds up to 48mph. On my old bike, I would spin frantically at 30mph and not be able to get any traction. Oh yeah, half way down I got stung my a bee in the neck. Probably Karma for giving everyone charley horses at top of the mountain. Anyway, it was worth it.
Alright, so I made it through that day. Sweet... Bedtime is 10pm tonight.
Sunday morning wake up 5:30AM go down to the UofA Campus and register for the Jim Click run and roll 8K (around 5 miles) along with about 15 tricats, and hundreds of other people. 7:30 race starts and the Africans sprint off at 4:50 mile pace, I end up doing the first mile in 5:06 which is one second off my PR for the mile. After I realize I am running way too fast, I slow down a bit and try to hold a steady pace. Mile 3 I end up at 16:30, which is averaging 5:30 mile pace. Mile 4 I hit 22:10 which is a 5:40 mile, and end the race at 22:19 which averages out to about 5:40 pace for the entire race. Not bad for only averaging 2 runs a week.
Side note, Cardinals and Dbacks won.... YAY
